Werun very toughlyin the jungle for many monthsand in theend we took refuge at Noh Poe camp.

When we fled around like this, the daily functioning of our organization was stopped for a few months. The first time we were relocated innoh Poe camp TharaSher Nay Taw controlled it and after one year they organized an election in Noh Poe camp so the new leader of hteekawkeecould start to manage this organization again.

In 1998 hteekawkee congress majority election was held and the person who won the election was saw Ra Ah. Therefore Saw Ra Ah took the hold ofhteekawkee student network group from 1998 to 1999. After thara Saw Ra Ah, saw Eh Tha Yu and NawPwoPwowere in office from 1999 to 2002

A group of students from the University of Hong Kong visited KSNG MaeSot office several days ago. They came here both with the curiosity to know more about Karen and the wish to help.

In discussion session, Saw Shar Nay Thaw and other members talked about KSNG's activities, achievements and difficulties while working in camps and IDPs areas. They were all very much impressed and showed particular interest in the radio programme.

Led by Eugene (KSNG's communicator of Mae La camp), Hong Kong students also visited Mae La Camp. They met with KSNG-Mae La group and explored the its radio station. "Radio is probably the most effective and recreational way of receiving updated and practical information for refugees stuck in camps." Said one of the girls.

Later, they went to LMTC and had a very good time with students there. After ice-breaking games, discussion on various topics were conducted in a thought-provoking manner. Problems included Is it proper to build up industry zones in Karen state in the transition period? How do you (LMTC students) see foreigner journalists and NGO workers pouring into the camp?

Everyone from both sides learned a lot through this trip.

Therefore, your donations make a large and immediate impact on our ability to achieve our objectives of uniting and empowering Karen youths.

In April 2004 KSNG started a new activity called “Theatre for Social Change”. In a creative way, we incorporate social and political issues in dramas and reach out to different people in Karen community. Each play is followed by a discussion session where people can talk about the subjects being presented. In this way, not only are people entertained, but also their critical thinking developed.

KSNG has supported Internally Displaced students for a couple of years and support internally displaced School in Mutraw and Dooplaya a district. We distribute stationaries which are collected from KSNG’s working groups in the camps. These students often have to escape their lives from the government military’s brutal torture. Furthermore, they have no stable shelters as they are forced to move from place to place. It is our hope that those underprivileged children would be able to read and write with our help.

Cultural & Education

KSNG has publications of Student friend Magazine (SFM), and Factual Information and New Optics (FINO).

a. Student Friend Magazine (SFM)

Students’ Friend Magazine (SFM) was started in 1995 and was published every two months. After 2007, we do it every four months due to financial difficulties. The magazine committee is in charge of the layout and printing of the magazines. Up to now, the KSNG has published 29 issues of SFM. Each issue serves as a forum for grassroots students from different camps along the Thai-Burmese border. Students express their ideas, opinions, and feelings by writing articles and poems. SFM is also considered the a significant opportunity for strengthening students’ corporation.

b. Factual information new option (FINO)

Since 2000, KSNG started a monthly community newsletter called "Factual Information News Optics" (FINO). However, there were only 30 issues of FINO altogether due to financial difficulties. This Karen language publication contains international and community news, sports as well as critiques on current issues that concern the Karen people. The 1,000 copies are distributed inside the refugee camps and Karen State.

What is KSNG?

Posted by Anonymous on | 0 comments | Leave a comment...

KSNG, Karen Student Network Group was formed in July 6th, 1996, on the assumption that students and youths must play a key role in achieving a free and democratic Burma and must be prepared as the future leaders. Since then, KSNG has been working on the solidarity and empowerment of Karen youths by organizing various activities and providing crucial services

KSNG is one of the first Karen student organizations in history to organize youth into one large network group, instead of fragmented and isolated groups. Today, the KSNG comprises ten student-working groups with a membership of over 3,000 students, and operates along the Thai-Burmese border. Most of the KSNG members live in the Karen refugee camps, while some live in Thailand and abroad.
`
KSNG believes that justices are important for peace in Burma. KSNG believes that justice means equality in all aspects of gender, economic, ethnic rights, polities and social.

Our mission is to create better understanding among Karen student and youths for united political goals and objectives, so they will be prepared to lead the Karen people towards an united, democratic, non-racist, non-sexist, and prosperous Burma.
